case study in stone

recreating Bishopthorpe Gothick

We were commissioned to return Atkinson’s broken design to its original form, which seemed impossible. Pinnacles had gone from the belfry, only three crenellations survived at the gable and the window tracery was missing.

But it had not been thrown away. With rare foresight the local parish council had kept it stored for thirty years in the village hall along with other pieces of the original masonry, including one of the belfry pinnacles. This unexpected discovery of apparently lost primary fabric made the project more feasible.
