Georgian masons had built this monument from ashlars bedded on only 2 - 3mm of lime putty.
This is extremely fine work but our masons had to be even more skilled.
They were not working in horizontal layers from the ground upwards but vertically, lifting and sliding heavy tracery stones into position sideways, but with the same minimal mortar beds. This is masonry work at its finest, and one of the reasons we recommended them for a craft award is that we could not find the slightest trace of a chipped arris anywhere.
